You've got it, boy, you don't have to yearn for it.
A pretty girl is better than a plain one. A leg is better than an arm. A bedroom is better than a living room. An arrival is better that a departure. A birth is better than a death. A chase is better than a chat. A dog is better than a landscape. A kitten is better than a dog. A baby is better than a kitten. A kiss is better than a baby. A pratfall is better than anything. - Preston SturgesHusband and I have been on a Preston Sturges tear. We can't stop. I think it started with The Lady Eve and just ballooned out into a full-on obsession. His films are amazing. Hilarious. Probably the only time I've laughed out loud at slapstick and had such good will towards screwball comedies. The only thing that makes me sad is that we've seen almost everything now and there's not more to look forward to. His films feel utterly contemporary. They are very sophisticated and smart and just great, and I am a total fan. I want more, more, more. They are all great, but so far my favorites are Unfaithfully Yours (just unbelievable), The Lady Eve (Barbara Stanwyck, you are wowza), and The Palm Beach Story. The Miracle of Morgan's Creek is shockingly racy with a syrupy Americana coating on top. A very wonderful runner up goes to The Good Fairy, which he wrote and it is beautiful. But they're all worth watching. Rent them all. Possibly in chronological order. We're saving Sullivan's Travels for last to go out with a bang.
I just wanted to share the good will. If you're in a slump, these are the movies for you.
Sullivan's Travels. Perfection.
If you want some dessert after your Sturgesfest, watch My Man Godfrey, ( 1936 ). Carole Lombard will make your heart smile.
