I just got back from a lunchtime lecture by a man from this organization, who work to test and clean the ocean from plastics. It was really horrifying, what we were shown. Parts of the Pacific Ocean are so polluted with plastics that they outweigh plankton by 6 to 1. The birds and fish are consuming them and dying, and there's no forseable end to it. The plastics are altering the endocrine structure of whatever eats it, which will in turn affect humans. As the ending of the documentary they presented stated, "humans could lose the ability to reproduce in only two generations."
The solutions presented are few, since they've lobbied heavily to little avail at plastics companies to produce plant-based, biodegradable plastic. The speaker whistfully told us that as a fifty year old, his generation was the last to swim in a clean ocean as children. If we stopped completely using plastics right now, it would take about 500 years to reverse the damage we've caused, and every bit of plastic that was ever made is still in existence. FUN!
....aaaaaand, we just had another earthquake. That's the second one this week. Super fun!
....aaaaaand, I've just returned from being evacuated, as a "precaution." Doubleplus fun!
I think the tsunami warning rates higher on the fun scale. Lisa | 06.16.05 - 3:35 pm | #
