Camilla Tortoreto Rowe

On Sunday, May 30, 2004, the Feast of Pentecost, the Lord called Camilla home. She was born in Los Angeles on April 5, 1943 to Ruggero Tortoreto and Josephine Paterno Tortoreto, who preceded her in death. She attended St. Mary Magdalene School and Notre Dame Academy, and received her BA in history magna cum laude from Mount St. Mary’s College in 1965. On June 12, 1965, she married Warren Rowe. They moved to Albuquerque in 1981, where she taught at Assumption Parish School and then at Eisenhower Middle School from 1984 to 2003. In 1999, she received an MA in secondary education from UNM. She also received the Crystal Apple Outstanding Middle School Teacher Award.

Camilla was blessed with exceptional intelligence, generosity of spirit, humility, and devotion to her family, friends, students, colleagues, and to her Lord. She was a talented pianist and inherited a beautiful singing voice from her mother. Her courage was never more evident than during her battle with cancer over the past year.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Victoria Rowe and Adriana Roze of Los Angeles; her son, Daniel, of Albuquerque; and her sister, Maria Duran, also of Albuquerque. Other immediate family members include Adriana’s husband, David Roze; Daniel’s wife, Shannon, and Camilla’s three beloved grandchildren, Isabella, Nathaniel, and Gabriel; Maria’s husband Donald Duran; their daughter Christina O’Connell, her husband Brian, and Camilla’s grandniece Julia and grandnephew Evan, all of Albuquerque; Maria’s and Don’s son John, of San Diego; and their daughter Gabriella, also of Albuquerque.

The family welcomes flowers and also requests that any contributions be made to: “United Way in memory of Camilla Rowe, for Domestic Violence,” 2340 Alamo SE, Second Floor, Albuquerque NM 87106.

A rosary will be held at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, June 1, at French Mortuary, Eubank and Lomas. A mass will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 2 at the UNM Aquinas Newman Center.

Beautifully and courageously done. By both of you.

Lots and lots of love.
